Kenya has begun the destruction of methamphetamine worth an estimated KSh8.2 billion, following the interception of a shipment aboard the Iranian vessel MV Mashallah in October 2025. The drugs, reportedly concealed in coffee sacks and measuring 98 per cent purity, were seized approximately 650 kilometres offshore in a multi-agency operation involving the Kenya Navy and Anti-Narcotics Unit.

The destruction is taking place as the criminal case against six Iranian nationals continues at the Shanzu Law Courts. A court previously found that the accused have a case to answer, allowing the trial to proceed to the defence stage.

The operation highlights Kenya's ongoing efforts to disrupt international drug trafficking networks operating in the Indian Ocean. #Mombasa

The latest remarks from United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Hassan Omar suggested that fingerprints of people who die shortly before polling day could be harvested and used on biometric voter registration kits to secure President Ruto's re-election. Omar made the remarks in Mombasa on Friday, September 11, where he also declared his intention to contest the Mombasa governorship.

“We will harvest fingerprints of individuals who die close to the election day before they are buried and use them on the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits to secure victory since the coming General Election is a do-or-die battle and will ensure that President Ruto secures re-election,” Omar said. #Mombasa

EACC Arrests Immigration Officer Over Alleged Ksh20,000 Passport Bribe

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested an immigration officer accused of soliciting a Ksh20,000 bribe to help fast-track the processing of a Kenyan passport.

The officer, attached to the State Department for Immigration, Border Control and Citizen Services, was arrested following a complaint filed at the EACC’s Lower Coast Regional Office in Mombasa.

According to the commission, the officer allegedly demanded the money in exchange for facilitating early fingerprint processing and speeding up the complainant’s passport application.

Preliminary investigations reportedly established that the officer had requested and agreed to receive Ksh20,000 in relation to the passport application.

EACC subsequently launched an operation to verify the allegations. The operation culminated in the officer’s arrest after investigators established the alleged bribery transaction.

The commission said the arrest followed a complaint received at its Mombasa office and that investigations into the matter are continuing. #mombasa

Chaos outside Mombasa County Assembly

A delegation of youth advocates and civil society groups was reportedly attacked outside the Mombasa County Assembly while attempting to deliver a petition calling for the passage of the stalled Mombasa County Youth Policy Bill.

The group had gathered peacefully but was reportedly blocked from entering the assembly to meet the Speaker. The situation later escalated, with individuals carrying sticks allegedly attacking the demonstrators, leaving several human rights defenders injured and triggering panic.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over the right to peaceful assembly, civic participation and the safety of human rights defenders in Kenya. #Mombasa #youths
