Residents of Kajiado County are facing a worsening water crisis, with some forced to trek up to 45 kilometres in search of the precious commodity following the closure of Tata Chemicals Magadi. The disruption has left families struggling to meet their daily water needs, while soaring costs and the long distances involved are threatening children’s access to education, with some missing school as households grapple with the crisis.
The situation has been compounded by prolonged dry conditions and the suspension of the company’s operations, which disrupted a water supply system that residents had relied on for years. According to The Standard, residents in villages around Magadi have been forced to seek alternative sources, with the limited water delivered by a single lorry proving insufficient to meet the needs of both households and livestock.
The crisis has renewed calls for urgent intervention by the national and county governments to provide reliable and affordable water supplies, protect children’s access to education and safeguard the livelihoods of communities in the arid region. President William Ruto ordered the restoration of water supplies to Magadi residents in September 2026 amid the dispute surrounding Tata Chemicals.
