Stephen Mung’ara: From Repairing Bicycles In Nakuru To Owning The Multi-Million STEM Hotel
Nakuru City is one of the urban centres blessed with numerous tourist attraction sites. Because of this, and coupled by Nakuru’s strategic location, its main income earner is the hospitality sector which boasts of dozens of luxurious hotels.
Among the oldest hotels in Nakuru is Kunste which was founded by the late billionaire Kung’u Stephen. Then there is Midrift (previously known as Gituamba) which is currently under the stewardship of Leonard Kamau, a serial hotelier who took over from his father’s venture.
Another luxurious boarding house is the STEM Hotel which has stood the test of time.
Stem Hotel Founder
The hotel was founded by Stephen Mung’ara Thuku who coined the name of the facility as an acronym of his names. According to various online sources, the businessman was once a bicycle repairman before he rose like the proverbial phoenix. #Nakuru
Stem hotel was founded in the ’80s and was one of the landmarks in Nakuru.
“We became customers of Stem Hotel when Mr. Steven had opened it in mid 1980s. It is still our favorite in Nakuru. Best deal by far in terms of service quality and price. Excellent quality and modestly priced simple food. Generous breakfast. Nice swimming pool. Internet both in the common spaces and in a majority of rooms. Friendly and attentive service,” reads one of the testimonials on Tripadvisor.
Location
It is situated on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway, just about 12 kilometres from Nakuru. The nearest attractions are Lake Nakuru (15 minutes drive) and Hyrax Hill Museum (approximately 10 km away).
Facilities
According to Google reviews, the hotel is rated 4 stars after 2060 reviews. Stem Hotel offers a variety of services including accomodation, swimming pool, carwash, bars, choma zone and dining area. It also has a well maintained lush green playground for children and team building activities.
The hotel has a barbecue and serves great nyama choma alongside other tasty cuisines. The restaurant area is decorated with sporting activity pictorials and here guests can enjoy captivating live football action.
Accomodation
The facility is constructed in an extensive linear building with a gable roof design that is fitted with clay tiles. It has over 100 accomodation rooms classified into various packages. According to their website, the executive room costs ksh 15000, the VIP double ksh 8000 while the deluxe is ksh 6000.
The most affordable room is the single room which goes for ksh 3500 a night. The rooms offer king-size beds, TV, Wi-Fi, closet, toiletries, fans, desk and 24 hour front desk.

The level of unemployment in Kenya is INSANE! 🇰🇪💔

A new lounge in Nakuru City advertised about 50 vacancies for waiters and waitresses.

The response? 3,900 young people showed up for the interviews.

Think about that for a moment:

50 jobs. 3,900 applicants.

Behind those numbers are graduates, skilled workers, parents, and young people desperate for an opportunity to earn a living.

This is not just a statistic. This is the reality of unemployment in Kenya.

We need an economy that creates opportunities at scale—not one where thousands of young people compete for a few dozen jobs.

🇰🇪 Kenya has the talent. Kenya has the energy. What Kenya needs is opportunity. #Nakuru

What happened yesterday in Nakuru Town West is a serious insult to the electorate and, in my view, one of the lowest points an elected leader can descend to. The MP was seen throwing loaves of bread to members of the public as people scrambled to get what they could, while he appeared to cheer and enjoy the spectacle, seemingly showing little regard for human dignity.

Young and old alike were left scrambling for bread, raising serious questions about the kind of leadership being offered to the people. This is also not the first time the MP has come under criticism; a few months ago, he was accused of chasing away members of the public who had gone seeking bursaries. If this is the kind of leadership being offered, then Mama Mboga and Boda Boda will continue to suffer. 😭😭 #Nakuru

Egerton University Launches Portal Allowing Parents to Track Students’ Academic Progress

Egerton University has introduced a new Parents Portal that will allow parents, guardians and sponsors to monitor students’ academic progress remotely.

The university announced the platform on August 19, describing it as a new digital channel for strengthening communication between the institution and students’ families.

Through the portal, parents and other authorised sponsors can access information about their students’ academic performance without having to wait for official reporting days, make phone calls or travel to the university.

Egerton University said the platform is designed to encourage greater involvement by parents and guardians in their students’ academic journeys while strengthening the connection between families and the institution.

“The Parents Portal is an exciting opportunity for parents/guardians/sponsors to become more involved in their student(s)' academic progress,” the university said.

The initiative reflects the growing adoption of digital platforms by educational institutions to provide families with faster access to academic information and improve engagement between universities and students’ support networks.

It was on March 31, 2025, that Jane Kagiri first said Laikipia ISN'T Mt Kenya but Rift Valley.
On August 16, 2025, Susan Kihika said Nakuru is Rift Valley, not Central Kenya.
On August 27, 2025, Kimani Ichung’wah said Kiambu is not part of the Mt Kenya region.
On June 14, 2026, Geoffrey Ruku openly pushed the Mt Kenya East–West divide.
Then, on August 11, 2026, Gachoki said Kirinyaga sits between East and West and should chart its own path.
Look at those dates. These things SUDDENLY became important after the political marriage between Ruto and H.E. Rigathi Gachagua, EGH ENDED.
These are things we never used to fight over like this. We always spoke as one.
There’s a man who calls himself patriotic, seated somewhere, who is systematically dismantling the political foundation of our people. He is hell-bent on making sure Murima never remain ONE again.
Now leaders from Nakuru, Embu, Kiambu and Laikipia are busy arguing over which murima people belong where instead of asking the BIGGEST QUESTIONS. They come with flowery and clever language to explain these new divisions.
If we aren't careful, by the time this is over and the man they are hunting votes for is long gone, we may look back and ask ourselves: What did we allow them to do to us?
We will have divided our own people into smaller and smaller pieces. We will have lost the sense that we belong together. We will have lost parts of our culture, our shared history and the political strength that came from standing together.
And the people who caused all this division will have moved on. #Elections2027 #Muranga #Kiambu #Nakuru #kirinyaga
