At the end of the day, ask yourself this. Why are the government and Edwin Sifuna's own political allies suddenly singing from the same hymn book against his presidential ambitions?
Because Sifuna was never supposed to happen this fast. His wave hit both State House and legacy heavyweights like Kalonzo Musyoka like a thief in the night, catching everyone flat-footed.
When Raila Odinga passed and his star began to shine, the streets crowned Sifuna Moto ya Masakari or magazeti. That fire hasn't cooled. If anything, it's burning hotter, and that's exactly what has the status quo sweating.
To the establishment, he's the outsider who wasn't invited to the table but pulled up a chair anyway. And if you've read your Machiavelli, you already know the rule. In politics, nothing is ever accidental. Every coincidence has a sponsor.
Take the naming games.
While Linda Mwananchi was still figuring out whether to register as a party or a coalition, the chessboard had already been set elsewhere.
Word on the street is Babu Owino, working in step with a fellow principal(s), was tasked with locking down the name Mwananchi Party.
Through proxies, people like Thuku were sent to secure Linda. Then, just days ago, Babu casually let slip that Sifuna would be launching Ukombozi Party, before Sifuna himself had said a word.
Suspicious timing, to say the least. Days later, Kalonzo, with James Orengo's blessing, rebranded Azimio into the Ukombozi Alliance.
This is not checkers but 7D chess, and Sifuna is being boxed in from every corner, government and opposition alike, while he keeps his cards close to his chest.
Everyone is holding their breath for his next move, because make no mistake, the war chest behind frustrating him is deep. Serious money is changing hands, the kind that buys silence and rents loyalty.
As Melisandre once warned in Game of Thrones, the night is long and full of terrors.
For Sifuna, that night has only just begun, and whether he emerges as the dawn Kenya's politics didn't see coming, or gets swallowed by it is left to be seen.
