Kenya’s plan to establish a 10,000-acre maize farm in Kilifi County under the Galana Kulalu Food Security Project has raised environmental concerns from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
NEMA has highlighted potential challenges involving water availability, wildlife migration routes and conflicts with local communities, particularly over access to water and grazing areas. The proposed project also includes rehabilitation of water intake infrastructure and development of supporting facilities.
The authority is proposing measures including protecting riverine corridors, mapping livestock migration routes and establishing mechanisms to manage water use among different communities and users. Members of the public have 30 days to submit their views before NEMA makes a decision on the project.
