He had no phone. No food. And no way to call for help. So he did something almost unbelievable.

In 2010, a man became stranded in the remote wilderness near Wollaston Lake, Saskatchewan, after going out by boat and getting trapped by difficult conditions. He spent several days alone in the cold, with no easy way to signal anyone for help.

Then he noticed the power lines.

He took his axe and chopped down four wooden power poles, deliberately causing an electrical outage affecting the isolated community. His reasoning was simple: SaskPower would have to investigate the sudden failure, and in such a remote area, that investigation could involve a helicopter.

His gamble worked.

A helicopter was sent to locate the source of the outage, and the crew discovered the stranded man near the damaged power line. He was rescued and taken to safety after spending days in the wilderness.

Officials later cautioned that cutting power lines was extremely dangerous because of the risk of electrocution. But the incident remains one of the strangest real-life survival stories: when he had no conventional way to call for help, he created a problem that he knew someone would have to come investigate.

A desperate decision. An incredible gamble. And, ultimately, a rescue. 🥶🇨🇦

Would you have thought of this if you were stranded?
