Ethiopia’s PM is selling a “7-year age discount.” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed posted a tourism pitch today: come to Ethiopia and get seven years younger.
The joke is the calendar. Much of the world is in 2026. Ethiopia marked New Year on September 11 and entered 2019 on its own 13-month calendar, Enkutatash. After that date, the year number sits about seven years behind the Gregorian calendar.
His post, with a promo video from the Prime Minister’s Office, says: come for the age discount, stay for the history, landscapes, coffee, and hospitality. Tagline: “where time is younger and the adventure is timeless.” The clip shows coffee, a plane window stamped “It’s 2019 here,” castles, Addis skyline, then “Visit & come to Ethiopia for an Age Discount.”
It is a marketing line, not a change to passports or legal age. The post has drawn praise for promoting the country and some jokes about kids under seven. #Ethiopia
