FRANCE 24 REPORT: “BURKINA FASO IS BECOMING THE NEW NORTH KOREA”

A report supplied by France 24 has featured the headline:

“Le Burkina est en train de devenir la nouvelle Corée du Nord”
“Burkina Faso is becoming the new North Korea.”

The statement was made in the context of a discussion about the direction of Burkina Faso under Captain Ibrahim Traoré, with exiled Burkinabè journalist Newton Ahmed Barry arguing that the country is increasingly characterised by concentrated political power, restrictions on opposition and growing isolation.

The report comes just days after Burkina Faso inaugurated its first national gold refinery, RAFFINOR-BF, in Ouagadougou.

The refinery has an initial capacity of 164 tonnes of gold annually, with plans for the capacity to eventually reach 515 tonnes. The Burkinabè government describes the project as a major step toward economic and mining sovereignty.

Interestingly, Burkina Faso has also been strengthening its relationship with North Korea. Officials from both countries met during the UN General Assembly and discussed expanding cooperation in strategic sectors.

🇧🇫 Burkina Faso’s political direction, economic sovereignty and relationship with the West continue to attract intense international attention. #Burkinafaso
