The government will require every farmer to tag their cows, sheep and goats with Animal Identification and Traceability (ANITRAC) tags as it moves to tackle livestock theft, improve disease surveillance and strengthen the tracking of animals across the country.
Speaking during the official opening of the Central Kenya National Show 2026 in Nyeri, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the system will give each animal a traceable identity, making it harder for stolen livestock to be moved through markets and sold without detection.
