Ruto Set to Unveil New Police Uniform as Officers Prepare for Nationwide Rollout

President William Ruto is set to unveil and commission a new Kenya Police Service uniform on Friday, August 28, during the passing-out parade of more than 6,000 police constables at the Kenya Police Training College in Kiganjo, Nyeri County.

The new attire will replace the deep navy-blue uniform currently worn by General Duty officers. According to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, the change follows recommendations from a 2023 public participation exercise in which police officers rejected the existing design and expressed a preference for an earlier uniform.

The newly graduating constables are expected to be among the first officers to wear the new uniform, with the National Police Service planning a phased rollout to General Duty officers across the country beginning Monday, August 31.

Kanja said the change is intended to boost officers' morale and ultimately improve service delivery. However, the new attire will not immediately apply to every unit within the National Police Service. Officers serving in the Administration Police Service and General Service Unit will retain their current uniforms as the transition takes place.

The uniform change comes about three years after the 2023 public participation exercise and marks another significant change to the appearance of Kenya's General Duty police officers within a relatively short period.
