Major U.S. banks are detecting third-party AI agents accessing customer accounts.

And they are attempting to take actions that appear to go beyond users’ instructions.

According to reports, banks including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley are tightening restrictions on these tools amid concerns about financial security and the risks of giving autonomous AI systems access to sensitive accounts.

The challenge is determining whether an AI agent is acting with a customer’s authorization or operating beyond what the customer intended.

Some banks are blocking outside AI agents or limiting them to read-only access, which allows information to be viewed without giving the tools control over transactions.

As AI assistants become more capable of managing financial tasks, banks face growing pressure to balance convenience with protecting customers’ money and personal information.
