In 1991, a tragic incident at the University of Ibadan Zoological Garden in Nigeria became one of the country’s most widely retold stories about faith and human judgment.
A preacher commonly identified as Daniel Abodunrin reportedly entered the lions’ enclosure believing that God would protect him, just as Daniel had been protected in the biblical story of the lions’ den.
According to accounts published years later, Abodunrin wanted to demonstrate the power of his faith by recreating the biblical miracle.
Reports differ on how he entered the enclosure. Some say he persuaded zoo staff to let him in, while others claim he entered without permission.
The lions reportedly initially moved away before the encounter turned fatal. He was attacked and died.
The biblical story, found in Daniel chapter 6, describes Daniel being thrown into a lions’ den as punishment for continuing to pray to God despite a royal decree.
According to the scripture, divine intervention protected him through the night.
The crucial difference is that the biblical Daniel did not voluntarily enter the den to test whether God would save him.
The Nigerian incident is remembered as a sobering reminder that religious conviction and deliberate exposure to danger are not the same thing.
