France getting pushed out of the Sahel is not the same thing as Africa being free. Lumumba’s point is simple. If you drive the French out and then bring in the Russians, Ukrainian contractors, or the Chinese to take the same ground, you have only changed the landlord. He puts it the way Samora Machel did: you are swapping one slave master for another, and telling yourself the new one is better.
The French arrangement was never a partnership. Bases, currency control, contracts, a quiet veto from Paris. Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger were right to reject that. The mistake is thinking the next foreign flag is liberation. Those new partners come for mines, access and leverage, not to build an Africa that processes its own resources and negotiates as one bloc.
A temporary ally against an old master is one thing. Handing him the title deeds is another.
