Do AI agents become a threat for big shopping platforms as the control shifts from the platforms to AI agents acting for the user?
With AI agents we are entering an era where AI receives the permission to actually EXECUTE useful things for you, instead of just supporting you with providing interesting answers to your daily questions or generating images and videos.
Just think about one particular use case: You are asking your personal AI agent to order something for you in the web. You are not accessing the shopping platform on your own, you don’t even see it, because the agent is doing the job for you.
However, this is raising new challenges for the platform owners.
According to recent news, @amazon is blocking @Meta's Muse from shopping on Amazon.
Amazon says Muse was accessing its marketplace without authorization and raised concerns around transparency, credentials and data access.
However, the @Shopify CEO @tobi lutke announced that they are doing the opposite, while @finkd Mark Zuckerberg already confirmed his statement.
Shopify is deeply partnering with Muse to enable checkout with Shop Pay on all Shopify stores. Users will be able to complete purchases through the AI assistant across Shopify stores, to offer an easy and delightful way to shop and check out via Muse.
Does Amazon see such a kind of access currently as a threat, while Shopify interprets it as an opportunity?
If AI agents become the interface through which people search, compare and buy:
The websites may no longer be the interface for the human users.
The AI agent becomes the interface.
And whoever controls that interface could control the customer relationship and the distribution channels. #Technology
