Burkina Faso just installed a technology that gives women answers in six hours. The alternative was waiting weeks or flying abroad.
MammaTyper is a molecular diagnostic tool for breast cancer. It identifies the molecular subtype of a tumor, which tells doctors exactly what treatment will work. Results in six hours. Not days. Not weeks. Six hours .
The technology is now operational at two university hospitals: CHU de Bogodogo in Ouagadougou and CHU de Pala in Bobo-Dioulasso . Burkina Faso is the only country in the sub-region to have it . The first use of this technology in Africa .
Before this, molecular subtyping required sending samples outside the country. That meant delays, costs, and medical evacuations for women who could not afford to wait . Now the test is done in Burkina Faso, at subsidized rates .
The numbers behind the urgency are brutal. In 2024, Burkina Faso recorded over 2,100 new breast cancer cases and roughly 1,000 deaths. That is three women dying every day . Breast cancer represents 55 percent of all female cancers in the country .
The acquisition came through the Presidential Health Initiative, the same mechanism funding the mobile clinics that have already screened over 230,000 women for cervical precancerous lesions and provided 30,000 free breast ultrasounds . Burkinabè doctors and technicians trained in Hamburg, Germany, to master the technology .
This is what health sovereignty looks like in practice. Not waiting for a foreign lab to process your samples. Not sending your women abroad for answers. Building the capacity at home, training your own people, and making it accessible at subsidized rates.
During Pink October 2026, the government is offering free breast cancer screening and targeting 6,000 free mammograms nationwide . The message is simple. Early detection saves lives. And now the diagnosis that follows detection can happen in Burkina Faso.
