🇰🇪 178 Police Officers Receive KSh178 Million Compensation

At least 178 police officers have received a combined KSh178 million in compensation for deaths and injuries sustained while responding to demonstrations and public protests.

Two officers who died received KSh3 million each, while officers who suffered severe injuries received varying amounts.

The compensation programme is also processing claims from civilians affected by human-rights violations during the protests.

Should police officers injured or killed during protests receive compensation in the same way as civilian victims?

IG Kanja Orders Immediate Interdiction of Officers After Deaths in Police Custody

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has directed that officers responsible for police cells be immediately interdicted whenever a detainee dies in custody, pending investigations.

The directive targets the Occurrence Book (OB) recorder, cell sentry and duty officer, who will be removed from duty as investigations establish the circumstances surrounding each death.

Kanja issued the directive on Wednesday, August 12, during a sensitisation forum on new Service Standing Orders and police reforms at the National Police Leadership Academy in Ngong.

The move is intended to strengthen accountability and oversight within the police service following deaths occurring in police custody. #Nairobi #Police
